Reseeding Information

Reseeding Information

When reseeding a lawn a few simple steps need to be taken to ensure good results. When these steps aren't followed, results are disappointing or short-lived.

Type of Grass Seed

When choosing your seed, be sure to choose tall fescue, typically three or more types of tall fescue in one mixture is best, a small percentage of ryegrass is okay, but not necessary.

Watering

Watering is not necessary, but helpful if temperatures rise.

Aeration and Seeding

In order for germination the soil must be disturbed, meaning; core aeration, detaching, slice seeding, topsoil or a good hard raking. By disturbing soil, this allows soil-seed contact, this will allow the seed to germinate. Simply spreading the seed around the lawn without disturbing the soil will result in 10% or less germination.

When to Seed

The best time to seed is the fall. Daytime temperatures are lower, longer, cooler nights with plenty of dew, and more consistent rainfall.
